Now in its 60th year the Association brings together like-minded people to further develop the aspirations of its founders, in order to deliver its aims and shared values.
IAPESGW’s Board and members have led the way in cooperating and collaborating with women through physical education, dance and sport worldwide.

Most recently – 16th IAPESGW Congress, July 2009
Members came together for the 16th IAPESGW Congress on 16-19 July 2009, at the University of Stellenbosch, Cape Town, South Africa.
The theme of the congress was:
Practice and Research in Physical Education and Sport in the spirit of UBUNTU*!
*UBUNTU – deep-rooted African maxim at the core of IAPESGW values about care and respect for others. ‘a person can be a person only through others’.
This was a wonderful event that brought interested professionals together to exchange ideas and knowledge; it also provided the opportunity to celebrate IAPESGW’s 60th year of support to the development of PE and sport for all girls and women across the world.
In brief the event saw:
- 200 delegates gathering in Cape Town for the 4-day event
- Representatives attending from 22 countries
- The election of a new President and Board
- A Life Membership bestowed on a member who has dedicated many years of service to the organisation
- Lively debate and exchange of information to further the aims of IAPESGW and partner organisations
- Acceptance of a bid to host the 17th Congress in 2013
A statement was issued at the end of the Congress -
The Stellenbosch Importance Statement, 19 July 2009 (428KB)
